Get MDMA therapy for PTSD, Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe condition that can significantly impact individuals. Despite the availability of effective treatments, some patients do not fully benefit from them, highlighting the need for alternative approaches. One such approach involves the use of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), a substance known for inducing feelings of closeness, empathy, insightfulness, and well-being. Recent research has shown promising results when combining MDMA with psychotherapy, leading to improvements in PTSD symptoms. This is an open-label trial in which all enrolled participants will receive MDMA administration during treatment. An initial phone screen will be conducted for interested individuals to describe the study and assess eligibility. Following the phone screen, informed consent will occur. Interested individuals will also complete a drug test in their local community to be reviewed by the study team.

In this upcoming study, researchers will investigate the potential benefits of combining MDMA with Prolonged Exposure therapy (PE), a widely recognized treatment for PTSD. Participants will receive MDMA on the second day of a 10-day PE program, with daily therapy sessions. The study will take place at the Emory Brain Health Center, with recruitment through community advertising and mental health referrals.

Additionally, the research team will gather psychophysiological data to explore how MDMA could enhance the effectiveness of PE therapy for PTSD. This study is significant as it marks the first time MDMA will be integrated into an evidence-based PTSD treatment. The study population will comprise individuals meeting PTSD criteria and deemed suitable for MDMA treatment.
